What is Reiki

Reiki is an energy healing technique that promotes relaxation, reduces stress and anxiety through palm healing. Reiki practitioners deliver universal life force energy to your body through the palm of their hands, improving the flow and balance of your chakras to support healing. There are 7 major chakras of the body and these chakras are “wheels” that move or spin energy through the body. When we experience stress, challenges, physical or emotional traumas, we often hold the energy from these experiences in our bodies. The “wheels” become stuck and energy cannot flow as freely through our bodies causing disharmony. When this happens, we experience blockages in our bodies which can cause emotional and/or physical complications. Reiki assists in breaking up that stuck energy and releases it, at a pace at which you are ready. This is all done by the use of universal life force energy.

Reiki is an excellent complement to other types of medical and therapeutic treatments and can increase the efficacy of those other types of healing treatments. However, if you are already in good emotional and physical health, it can enhance your ability to respond to stress and serve as a gateway to aligning yourself more fully with your spiritual self.

It can ignite or enhance an awakening to your higher self.

What can I expect?

During a Reiki session, you lie on a massage table face up and fully clothed, while a practitioner places their palms on or just over the main chakras of your body. Your practitioner will ask you during your introduction if you are comfortable with the hands on technique. If you are not, they will raise their hands up over the different chakras of your body about 1-2 inches. The practitioner positions their hands in up to 15 different ways, starting from your head down to your feet. They decide how long to leave their palms in each spot based on the flow of energy that they feel through their hands. You might feel sensations like heat, tingling, or pulsing where their hands are placed, or throughout your body. Some people get so relaxed that they fall asleep and that is ok! Some people report seeing visualizations such as colors or pictures and this is normal. Your experiences may become deeper the more you continue with Reiki. Your practitioner may also use crystals during your reiki session. Crystals can add an extra element of healing to the treatment by helping to release emotional, mental, or spiritual blocks. Crystals may be placed on or around your body or you may be asked to hold a crystal in your hands.

Reiki FAQ:

What should I wear to a session?

Wear something comfortable. You will remain fully clothed; however, you will need to remove your shoes, bulky jewelry, and/or glasses.

Can I talk to my practitioner during the session?

Silence is requested so that you and the practitioner can fully be present with the universal energy. However, it is absolutely encouraged to inform your practitioner if you have any needs or concerns during your session (ie: you are cold and would like a sheet/blanket, you need a drink of water or a tissue, etc.) Soft music will be played during your session as well to assist in relaxation.

What does it feel like?

Experiences vary from person to person, however, overall, people report feeling sensations like heat, tingling, or pulsing where the practitioner's hands are, or throughout your body.

Will it hurt?

Reiki is an incredibly gentle healing modality, so it will not hurt. However, during and/or after a session, you may feel a release of emotion that has been held inside your body for any given amount of time. This can cause some tears, however, it is typically due to a feeling of relief from what has caused you distress. Most people report feeling incredibly relaxed and peaceful after a session.

How long does it take?

Each session is approximately 1 hour which includes an introduction, relaxation, energy healing and sharing of experience.

About Jena:

Jena Kalvin is a Reiki II practitioner living in Haddon Township, NJ. Jena received her reiki attunements in 2014 and feels it is part of her life’s purpose. Jena’s greatest desire is to help others find their spirit within and to do so in a warm, comforting and peaceful way. Jena is constantly learning new ways to heal herself and others through different spiritual modalities and is excited to add more attunements and certifications to her experience in the near future.

Prior to working at Glow, Jena took two years off from employment to care for a terminally ill family member. During this time, Jena gained a deeper sense of love and life which informs her reiki practice today. She feels those two years caretaking were two of the hardest, yet most rewarding years of her life.

Before being a full time caretaker, Jena was a foster care adoption worker for a non-profit agency in Philadelphia, PA for 11 years. She was inspired to enter into the field of social services after a life changing volunteer trip to Tanzania. In 2008, Jena spent 4 months living and volunteering at an orphanage for teenage girls in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Jena was greatly impacted by her work with the girls at the Olof Palme Orphans Education Center and remains in touch with many of the girls today.

From 2004-2009, Jena worked as a recruiter for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) while simultaneously achieving a Bachelor of the Fine Arts (BFA) from the University of Pennsylvania. Recruiting for PAFA came easy to Jena because she knew the program first hand as she graduated with a Certificate in Painting in 2004. From 2004-2012, Jena exhibited her paintings throughout Pennsylvania in group and solo exhibitions. Jena has always been fueled by her passion for spirituality. Even her artwork was centered on connecting the viewer to “the light.” Jena’s quest to explore all aspects of the metaphysical world has been lifelong and she feels she has only scratched the surface.
